Encaustic and mixed media on wood
30 × 40 in.
From my Habitat Series, A Life Away is a meditation on finding balance after chaos. Bright colors and flashes of gold evoke vitality and hope, while hexagonal shapes symbolize the hive—the community that stepped in during a recent family health crisis. Beneath many waxy layers, a faint figure of a woman twirls, her skirt sweeping in quiet defiance, embodying resilience and the search for rhythm. Floating buildings drift across the sky, mirroring the sense of being unmoored during a time when health and home felt uncertain.
The work reflects a journey from fight-or-flight toward grounding, releasing rigid expectations and comparisons to past or future selves. It embraces the beauty of a messy story—one without clear beginnings or endings, yet rich with setting, perspective, and an arc toward lightness and wonder.
